PERKINS WRESTLING CAMPS & CLINICS
PERKINS WRESTLING CAMPS & CLINICS
The Camp of Champs has been running since 2001 when Coach Crabtree brought this first-ever youth camp to Perkins Wrestling. The camp is held in October each year, and is a great warm-up to the club season. It is a good camp for beginners, with several coaches and helpers to assist with learning/reviewing wrestling. It is also good for advanced and intermediate kids as well, for those wrestlers who want to polish up on their technique and pick up some new stuff prior to the start of the club season. A few of our best wrestlers over the years have gotten their start in wrestling at this camp. The Camp of Champs is a three-day camp, each of the three sessions held in the early evening. Perkins High School wrestlers and coaches will assist Coach Crabtree and the guest instructors with the camp. Every year we have 60-plus kids attend the camp from several different area school districts.
CAMP OF CHAMPS (Fall)
STUD SQUAD (Summer)
The Stud Squad was started in 2004 by Coach Thom, and was directed at our advanced and
upper level youth wrestlers. This camp takes place in June, and runs four days long, starting in the morning, and finishing in the afternoon. The Stud Squad focuses on intensity and hard work, as well as advanced technique and instruction, live wrestling, and conditioning as well. Coach Crabtree took over the Stud Squad Camp in 2008, and it continues to be a nice home-grown process for our seasoned youth wrestlers. Perkins High School and Junior High wrestlers will also assist with the camp.
OTHER CAMPS
There are many options to attend various camps throughout the year, located near and far. Many of the college universities in and around the state have youth camps in the summer, and often offer extension camps on the weekends at local high schools as well. Many of these camps offer various weeks specifying certain aspects of wrestling, such as beginner, advanced, intensity training, and freestyle. Coach Nash and Coach Crabtree attended a father/son camp in Pennsylvania in 2007, in which the parents get to interact, stay in the dorms, eat at the mess hall, and learn right along with the kids. When our kids get into Jr. High and High School, they will have the opportunity to attend a team camp every summer. Coaches Crabtree and Thom take about 20-25 jr. high and high school kids each year to college campuses in Michigan, Illinois, and Pennsylvania, to compete against other teams from the region.
OPEN MATS
Although not considered a camp, open mats are a vital part of any wrestling program. Open mats are a simple, non-practice format in which live wrestling is the primary function. Open mat can also be a good time to get some one on one with the coaches, and some wrestlers use this time to work on moves and technique. The Perkins Wrestling Program as well as other local schools and clubs have open mat throughout the year.
